The McMains Center is the only one of its kind in the Greater Baton Rouge Area. Because of our multi-disciplinary staff, equipment, and facilities we are able to give hope to thousands of children and families throughout the Greater Baton Rouge area.

Our center houses facilities such as a brand new playground for our children, speech and language therapy areas, and more. Click here for directions to our building or read on to walk the hallways of the McMains Center online.

The Gardens at McMains

Behind the McMains Childrens Developmental Center sits a beautiful garden full of flower beds, vegetables, and roses. The garden is wheelchair accessible featuring different beds set at different heights for children of all ages and heights. Gardening has now become an integral part of physical, speech, and occupational therapy at the Center. The children enjoy being outside and planting in the dirt. It is relaxing and offers them a unique experience. They learn how to plant from start to finish and get to see the garden progress along from a seed to a flower or vegetable. The beds were designed and built by Al Hindrichs, husband of one of the Centers social workers and they are manicured and cared for by Nancy Broyles, a Center social worker, and her husband Allen, an LSU Ag Center research associate. Both of them are Master Gardeners and volunteer their personal time to maintain the garden area. The Burden Research Center, which focuses on horticulture research, donates plants to the Center after trial periods have finished. Many local companies have also contributed and participate in developing the outdoor area as well. Honeywell, Albemarle, Exxon Mobil, and Shell have all participated in Day of Caring projects through the Capital Area United Way.

The gardens were featured in the January edition of Garden Ideas and Outdoor Living, a Better Homes and Gardens publication.

Donations and contributions of garden supplies and plants are welcome (Mulch, fertilizer, seasonal plants, tools) Please contact our Develpment office at if you have any questions or would like to contribute to our therapy garden.
